4.3 Concreate wall coating (dry rooms)

General

This coating work method is indicative and deals with the coating of a concreate wall with the ELAPROOF + SAND system. The ELAPROOF + SAND wall covering system consists of ELAPROOF PRIMER primer, ELAPROOF + SAND wall covering and ELACOAT TOPCOAT RAL / ELACOAT TOPCOAT topcoat

The coating work method is not a repair plan or a construction plan. The overall design of the coating is always the responsibility of the site-specific designer.

Platform refurbishment

In areas to be renovated, all possible moisture-sensitive adhesive residues must be removed from the concreate wall. Any loose floor screeds must also be removed in their entirety.

Any gaps between the boards, screw holes and cracks in the board surfaces must be filled / levelled with a floor level suitable for concreate surfaces. A floor level suitable for chipboard surfaces should also be used for possible over-levelling. When using screeds, also check with the floor screed manufacturer for a suitable primer.

Primer

Prior to coating, cleaned and repaired Concreate substrates are primed with ELAPROOF PRIMER without the addition of water. Allow the primer to dry completely before applying ELAPROOF + SAND. The purpose of the primer is to seal the surface of the concreate from the moisture released by the incoming coating.

Concreate walls painted with a good quality primer do not need to be primed separately. Old primer or topcoat coats can be sanded mechanically or treated with suitable washing liquid to ensure adhesion of ELAPROOF + SAND Wall covering. In these cases, it is also recommended to carry out a separate adhesion test before treating larger areas, to ensure that the adhesion between ELAPROOF + SAND Wall covering and the paint and at the same time sufficient adhesion of the original paint to the substrate after the coating is applied.

Coating

Before starting the coating, the ELAPROOF + SAND Wall covering must be mixed. Use a mixing paddle in the mixer that does not take air into the sealant when mixing, eg COLLOMIX KR series mixing paddle.

The primed substrate is coated with ELAPROOF + SAND (M1 / EC 1) wall coating. The coating is applied to the substrate with a steel spatula.

ELAPROOF + SAND Wall covering is applied to the substrate in two separate applications. The consumption of each application must be at least approx. 1.0 kg / m2, in which case the total consumption is at least 2.0 kg / m2. The actual dry film thickness must be min. 1.0 mm.

The drying time between coats of ELAPROOF + SAND depends largely on the conditions at the installation site. At conditions of approx. + 20 °C, 50% RH can be applied a second time approx. 5 h after the first application. Lower temperatures and higher humidity significantly extend the drying time.

The ELAPROOF + SAND Wall covering applied twice can be applied after approx. 12 hours in conditions + 20 °C, 50 % RH.

Topcoat

The dried ELAPROOF coating is treated with clear ELACOAT TOPCOAT or tinted ELACOAT TOPCOAT RAL topcoats to facilitate cleaning and maintenance. For monochromatic floors, we recommend topcoating with tinted ELACOAT TOPCOAT RAL topcoat to even out any color differences in the ELAPROOF + SAND coating. On flaked floors, we recommend flaking with ELAPROOF PVA paint flakes on wet ELACOAT TOPCOAT RAL topcoat and, after drying, finishing with clear ELACOAT TOPCOAT topcoat.

In the topcoat, the topcoat component A is first mixed for 1 to 2 minutes, then the hardener component B is added to the mixed A component and mixed again for 2-3 minutes. Use, for example, the COLLOMIX KR series mixing paddle for mixing.

The mixture is applied on top of the dried ELAPROOF coating with a short-pile roller (6 – 7 mm) by cross-rolling. The consumption of the topcoat is approx. 110 – 200 g / m2 / application, depending on the degree of roughness of the selected ELAPROOF + SAND coating. The topcoat is dry to dry after approx. 16 h at + 20 °C, 50% RH. The full duration of mechanical stress is achieved under the above conditions in about 4 days and the full chemical duration in about 7 days.

NOTE! Some shades of ELACOAT TOPCOAT RAL topcoats may require 2 to 3 coats to achieve sufficient coverage! See a separate table for the coverage of ELACOAT TOPCOAT RAL topcoats.

4.5 Coating of the tiled bathroom wall

General

This coating work method is indicative and deals with the coating of a tiled bathroom wall with the ELAPROOF + SAND system. The ELAPROOF + SAND wall covering system consists of ELAPROOF PRIMER primer, ELAPROOF + SAND floor covering and ELACOAT TOPCOAT RAL / ELACOAT TOPCOAT topcoat

The coating work method is not a repair plan or a construction plan. The overall design of the coating is always the responsibility of the site-specific designer.

Platform refurbishment

The tiled wall in the bathroom must be waterproofed with approved waterproofing for use under the ceramic tiles. This waterproofing must not be more than 10 years old during the coating phase, based on Finnish RIL 107-2012 guideline. Please check if there are any similar restrictions in the local regulations and follow those!

The tile surfaces are washed first with an acidic (pH 1 – 3) detergent for cleaning the tile surfaces and then with an alkaline (pH 8 – 11) detergent and rinsed with plenty of water. The cleaned wall is allowed to dry for at least 1 day before starting the coating.

The silicone seams at the joint between the wall and the floor will be removed if the wall covering will extend over them.

Seals

If necessary, all structural joints and boundary points such as floor and wall joints, bushings, columns, and seals of any floor wells, etc. are implemented with a combination of ELAPROOF INDOOR + ELAPROOF SUPPORT FABRIC.

ELAPROOF INDOOR must be mixed before starting the seals. Use a whisk in the mixer that does not take air into the sealant when mixing, eg COLLOMIX KR series mixing paddle.

Apply ELAPROOF INDOOR sealant with a brush and press ELAPROOF SUPPORT FABRIC onto the fresh compound so that all air escapes under the support fabric. Apply another coat of ELAPROOF INDOOR.

Sealing of one running meter (1 m) requires approx. 0.15 l of ELAPROOF INDOOR.

If the sealable bushings allow the pre-formed bushing to be threaded over the bushing into a collar, the bushings can be shaped, if necessary, for example, by cutting from N1 or N2 category geo-textiles, unless the ELAPROOF SUPPORT FABRIC is wide enough to carry the penetration. ELAPROOF ROOF series reinforcement fabrics, available in widths of 150 mm, 350 mm and 1000 mm, can also be used for seals.

Coating

Before starting the coating, the ELAPROOF + SAND floor covering must be mixed. Use a mixing paddle in the mixer that does not take air into the sealant when mixing, eg COLLOMIX KR series mixing paddle.

The primed substrate is coated with ELAPROOF + SAND (M1 / EC 1) floor coating. The coating is applied to the substrate with a steel spatula.

ELAPROOF + SAND floor covering is applied to the substrate in two separate applications. The consumption of each application must be at least approx. 1.0 kg / m2, in which case the total consumption is at least 2.0 kg / m2. The actual dry film thickness must be min. 1.0 mm.

7.1 Coating of Concrete Plinth

General

This coating work method is indicative and deals with the coating of a concrete plinth with the ELAPROOF + SAND system. The ELAPROOF + SAND plinth protection system consists of ELAPROOF PRIMER primer, ELAPROOF + SAND Plinth Protection and ELACOAT TOPCOAT RAL / ELACOAT TOPCOAT topcoat

The coating work method is not a repair plan or a construction plan. The overall design of the coating is always the responsibility of the site-specific designer.

Platform refurbishment

Adequate tensile and compressive strength is a key factor in the performance of coating materials. The concrete or screed substrate must be durable and have sufficient compressive strength. The substrate must be clean, sufficiently dry and free of all contaminants such as dirt, oil, grease, weak coatings and surface treatments.

If necessary, weak layers are removed by sufficiently efficient mechanical methods such as grinding or milling. For coating, the best result is achieved if it is applied to a clean concrete surface with a roughness equivalent to a wood-ground concrete surface.

Platform patching and levelling

Any cavities in the concrete surface are filled with a filling compound suitable for the coating combination before coating. If the concrete substrate to be coated has rough or uneven areas, they must be levelled with a levelling compound suitable for the coating combination. It should be noted that the irregularities tend to be visible on the coated surface.

Only special products that meet the above compressive and tensile strength requirements may be used to repair, straighten, and level the substrate. The suitability of the above products as a substrate for a liquid coating must always be ensured. from the product supplier.

Primer

Prior to coating, cleaned and repaired concrete substrates are primed with ELAPROOF PRIMER diluted 1: 2 with water (1 part primer: 2 parts water). The primer may be damp before applying ELAPROOF + SAND Plinth Protection.

7.2 Coating of Block Plinth

General

This coating work method is indicative and deals with the coating of a block plinth with the ELAPROOF + SAND system.

It is therefore advisable to always level the block with a suitable mortar or leveling compound before applying ELAPROOF + SAND plinth. If necessary, weak layers are removed by sufficiently efficient mechanical methods such as grinding or milling.

7.3 Grit coating of a concrete wall

General

This coating work method is indicative and deals with the grit coating of a concrete wall with the ELAPROOF + SAND system.

Sufficient tensile and compressive strength is a key factor in the functionality of coating materials. The concrete or screed base must be durable and have sufficient compressive strength. The substrate must be clean, sufficiently dry and free of all impurities such as dirt, oil, grease, weak coatings and surface treatments.

If necessary, weak layers are removed with sufficiently effective mechanical methods such as grinding or milling. Regarding the coating, the best end result is achieved if it is carried out on a clean concrete surface, the roughness of which corresponds to a wood-rubbed concrete surface.

Patching and leveling of the platform

Any holes in the concrete surface are filled with a filling compound suitable for the coating combination before coating. If the concrete substrate to be coated has jagged or uneven areas, they must be leveled with a screed suitable for the coating combination. It should be noted that unevenness tends to show on the coated surface.

Only special products that meet the compression and tensile strength requirements mentioned above may be used to repair, straighten and level the substrate. The suitability of the above-mentioned products as a base for a coating to be applied as a liquid must always be confirmed by from the supplier of the product.

Waterproofing of the back side of the concrete wall

The moisture-technical functionality of a wall coated with ELAPROOF + SAND plinth protection must be ensured by treating the back side of the wall to make it waterproof as well. The easiest way to achieve this is by implementing waterproofing with the ELAPROOF coating.

When implementing waterproofing with ELAPROOF coating, follow the instructions given by this coating work method regarding the pretreatment and priming of the substrate.

Waterproofing

Before starting the waterproofing, the ELAPROOF coating must be mixed. Use a whisk in the mixer that does not introduce air into the coating during mixing, e.g. wire whisks from the COLLOMIX KR series.

The primed substrate is coated with ELAPROOF coating. The coating is applied to the substrate with a steel trowel, roller or, if necessary, a high-pressure sprayer.

The ELAPROOF coating is applied to the substrate in two separate applications. The consumption of each application should be approx. 0.9 l/m2, making the total consumption approx. 1.8 l/m2. It is recommended that the realized dry film thickness be approx. 1.0 mm.

The drying time between applications of the ELAPROOF coating depends greatly on the conditions at the installation site. When the conditions are approx. + 20 °C, 50% RH, the second application can be carried out approx. 5 h after the first application. A lower temperature and higher air humidity will significantly extend the drying time.
The twice-applied ELAPROOF coating is suitable for further processing after approx. 12 h under conditions of + 20 °C, 50% RH.

Earth pressure

In walls whose back side is subjected to earth pressure, the ELAPROOF coating acting as a waterproofing must be protected against wear caused by earth pressure with insulation boards or dam boards. Among the insulation boards, PIR insulation boards work best for the purpose. When using a dam plate, its installation direction must be taken into account. The dam plate, which acts as a protection for the waterproofing, should be installed with the smooth side facing the waterproofing, so that the ridged edges of the dam plate do not cause pressure in the direction of the waterproofing.

Primer

Prior to coating, cleaned and repaired concrete substrates are primed with ELAPROOF PRIMER diluted 1: 2 with water (1 part primer: 2 parts water). The primer may be damp before applying ELAPROOF + SAND Plinth Protection.

Coating

Before starting the coating, the ELAPROOF + SAND Plinth Protection must be mixed. Use a mixing paddle in the mixer that does not take air into the sealant when mixing, eg COLLOMIX KR series mixing paddle.

The primed substrate is coated with ELAPROOF + SAND Plinth Protection. The coating is applied to the substrate with a steel spatula.

ELAPROOF + SAND Plinth Protection is applied to the substrate in two separate applications. The consumption of each application must be at least approx. 1.0 kg / m2.

The ELAPROOF + SAND Plinth Protection applied twice can be applied after approx. 12 hours in conditions + 20 °C, 50 % RH.

Topcoat

If necessary, the dried ELAPROOF + SAND Plinth Protection coating is treated with clear ELACOAT TOPCOAT or tinted ELACOAT TOPCOAT RAL topcoats to facilitate cleaning and maintenance or to achieve the desired color tone.

In the topcoat, the topcoat component A is first mixed for 1 to 2 minutes, then the hardener component B is added to the mixed topcoat A and mixed again for 2-3 minutes. Use, for example, the COLLOMIX KR series wire whisk for mixing.

7.4 Grit coating of a block-built wall

General

This coating work method is indicative and deals with the grit coating of a block-build wall with the ELAPROOF + SAND system. The ELAPROOF + SAND plinth protection system consists of ELAPROOF PRIMER primer, ELAPROOF + SAND Plinth Protection and ELACOAT TOPCOAT RAL / ELACOAT TOPCOAT topcoat

In which case the total consumption is at least 2.0 kg / m2. The actual dry film thickness must be min. 1.0 mm.

The drying time between coats of ELAPROOF + SAND Plinth Protection depends largely on the conditions at the installation site. At conditions of approx. + 20 °C, 50% RH can be applied a second time approx. 5 h after the first application. Lower temperatures and higher humidity significantly extend the drying time.

6.7 Coating of bathroom with acrylic floor

General

This coating work method is indicative and deals with the coating of a floor coated with acrylic mass in the bathroom with the ELAPROOF + SAND system. The ELAPROOF + SAND floor covering system consists of ELAPROOF PRIMER primer, ELAPROOF + SAND floor covering and ELACOAT TOPCOAT RAL / ELACOAT TOPCOAT topcoat.

The coating work method is not a repair plan or a construction plan. The overall design of the coating is always the responsibility of the site-specific designer.

Platform refurbishment

The floor coated with acrylic mass in the bathroom must be less than 10 years old during the coating phase, based on Finnish RIL 107-2012 guideline. Please check if there are any similar restrictions in the local regulations and follow those?

Any cracks in the acrylic-coated bathroom floor are first treated by soldering them. After the solder resin has dried, the floor coated with acrylic is mechanically sanded.

The sanded acrylic-coated floor is washed with an all-purpose cleaner and rinsed with plenty of water. The cleaned floor is allowed to dry for at least 2 hours before starting the coating.

It is always recommended to perform an adhesion test on acrylic-coated floors before starting the actual ELAPROOF + SAND floor coating to ensure proper adhesion.

Sealing

If necessary, the seals of all structural joints and boundary points such as bushings and columns, etc. are implemented with a combination of ELAPROOF INDOOR + ELAPROOF SUPPORT FABRIC.

ELAPROOF INDOOR must be mixed before starting the seals. Use a whisk in the mixer that does not take air into the sealant when mixing, eg COLLOMIX KR series mixing paddle.

Apply ELAPROOF INDOOR sealant with a brush and press ELAPROOF BASE FABRIC onto the fresh compound so that all air escapes under the support fabric. Apply another coat of ELAPROOF INDOOR.

Sealing of one running meter (1 rmt) requires approx. 0.15 l of ELAPROOF INDOOR.

If the sealable bushings allow the pre-formed bushing to be threaded over the bushing into a collar, the bushings can be shaped, if necessary, for example, by cutting from N1 or N2 category geo-textiles, unless the ELAPROOF BASE FABRIC is wide enough to carry the penetration.

2.0 kg / m2, in which case the total consumption is approx. 4.0 kg / m2. The actual dry film thickness must be min. 2.0 mm.

The drying time between coats of ELAPROOF + SAND depends largely on the conditions at the installation site. At conditions of approx. + 20 °C, 50% RH can be applied a second time approx. 5 h after the first application. Lower temperatures and higher humidity significantly extend the drying time.

The ELAPROOF + SAND floor covering applied twice can be applied after approx. 12 hours in conditions + 20 °C, 50 % RH.

Topcoat

The dried ELAPROOF coating is treated with clear ELACOAT TOPCOAT or tinted ELACOAT TOPCOAT RAL topcoats to facilitate cleaning and maintenance. For monochromatic floors, we recommend topcoating with tinted ELACOAT TOPCOAT RAL topcoat to even out any colour differences in the ELAPROOF + SAND coating. On flaked floors, we recommend flaking with ELAPROOF Art&Deco Colour Chips on wet ELACOAT TOPCOAT RAL topcoat and, after drying, finishing with clear ELACOAT TOPCOAT topcoat.
